I'm not sure it's ever helpful or empathetic to say something like that. Even if the intentions are good. And even if you don't understand why someone's hurting.

Your pain is your pain and you don't need to justify it.

I wish she had told you that she didn't necessarily understand why you were hurting, but she could see that you are, and she was sorry for that.

Sigh.

Just file it under information about your friend, not about you?
