Marsha Linehan wrote a very helpful book called "Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder". In this book she goes through the major emotions (Love, Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear, Shame) and lists:
Words that are used for this emotion
Events that prompt this emotion
Interpretations that prompt this emotion
What it is like to experience the emotion
How we act on or express the emotion
Aftereffects of the emotionHer section on "Experiencing the Emotion of Sadness" lists:
"Feeling tired, run-down, or low in energy.
Feeling lethargic, listless; wanting to stay in bed all day.
Feeling a pain or hollowness in your chest or gut.
Feeling empty.
Crying, tears, whimpering.
Feeling as if you can't stop crying, or feeling that if you ever start crying you will never be able to stop.
Difficulty swallowing.
Breathlessness.
Dizziness."I found this book really helpful when I felt in need of education about emotions. Your local library can get it through interlibrary loan for you, or you might be able to see it at a bookstore. Good luck.
