Dinah,
I use the metaphor (from my T directed towards my troubles) of being sunburned. As someone highly sensitive, I am chronically sunburned, which makes me touchier than others. But stress is sunburning. I think of ego strength as psychological sunscreen. When I was doing my CCE, some of my sunscreen approaches including yoga, meditation, affirmations, visualizations, and reaching out to Babblers and extended family for additional support. All of those activities added to my "SPF". Perhaps I should consider that to be Stress Protection Factor rather than Sun Protection. So, if I add on more SPF, I can stay out in the "S" longer. Just like I need SPF 45 rather than 15 as my skin burns really easily.I also have a giant pair of sunglasses that make me look like Jimmy Neutron and a bottle of sunscreen on my desk to remind myself to take extra care.
I don't know if this will help, but I did find that the more I reminded myself to "put on my sunscreen" the more confident and even I felt even in the midst of stressful events.
Take care. I'll go to my room now.
