Question for Erika Schmidt...re: transference

Posted by jay on February 25, 2004, at 22:20:00

Hi Erika...thanks for taking the time to drop by. I am also a trained RSW (Registered Social Worker)
here in Ontario, Canada. (Working very hard towards my second grad degree.)

I’d like to bring up a popular topic...and that is the issue of transference. I have a very strong creed about this, as does the Canadian Association of Social Workers. It means, no going out for coffee with a therapist; no ventures outside of professional duties; no going out for a drink; no *dating* your therapist; no engagement in sexually provocative actions. I have a fellow co-worker who ran into a client from 10 years ago. She asked him for his phone-number (for dating purposes), which he gave her. Well, word got to the board of the Ontario College of Social Workers, and he received stern disciplinary action, including a month without a licence (and hence no work) as well a put on probation for 5 years, so if something like this happens again, he will permanently lose his licence.

I’d like to hear your comments on the situation (including counter-transference), and maybe some examples of how you dealt with these things in the past.

Best,
Jay
