I suppose it all depends on your point of view, Slinky. I don't think that those who believe somehow miss seeing what an unholy mess we've made down here. But those who believe in God also believe that He made us with free will. And He gave us a guideline on how to make the world a better place. Unfortunately, we all too often use our free will to bring sadness to the world.
I suppose there the believers begin to have different views of God's role. My personal view is that God weeps with us when those made in his image (in other words, with the knowledge of good and evil and the free will to choose between them), bring pain to the world.
