My middle daughter (6th grade) is in tae kwon do. We originally signed her up to channel some of her high-strung energy; classes are twice a week and are very challenging.
I have seen an amazing transformation in her attitude. She is learning discipline, self-control, perseverance, she has a great sense of accomplishment (5 ft. trophy in 1st competition!), and self-confidence like I've never seen in a pre-teen girl.
A great part of the training is self-defense, which makes me feel better about her learning to take care of herself. Plus she can kick like a horse! The look on her face when she breaks a board is priceless.
The funny thing is, the older boys in our neighborhood show her much more respect than they did before she started, like they're afraid to mess with her for fear of getting their butts kicked! ;~}
I regret not having my oldest daughter in classes. It makes me wonder if I could have saved her from some of the heartache and bad descisions she made while trying to find self-esteem/self-worth outside herself.
I just wanted to share this in hopes that it could help any of you or your children.
