I have no real help to offer, just my sympathy!
My younger daughter (7 1/2) has been diagnosed ADHD last year. She takes Ritalin but it doesn't seem to do much good. She still can't read though she is very intelligent. Lately she's been showing other symptoms beside the usual ones that you've described - inattention, disruptive behavior etc. She also lies all the time, steals money from us and from her teacher, bothers her older sister, and last week she deliberately sprayed stove cleaner all over her face and my husband took her to the ER to check that she didn't harm her eyes (she didn't, thank god!) Today she disappeared at 5 PM, and we've searched for her until almost midnight, when a cop brought her back! As I'm writing this, I'm still shaking with reaction.
We're arranging to have her transferred to a special school, where she'll be in a small class and get help with her schooling. We also had her analyzed at a psychiatric clinic for children, and she'll begin therapy soon. The psychtherapist prescribed 1/2 mg of Risperdal daily to tranquilize her. She says that without it she wouldn't benefit from therapy because of her constant activity. Has anyone heard of dosing kids that young with Risperdal? I haven't given it to her yet. I'm scared it will turn her into a zombie...
We're also starting counselling for ourselves, to help us deal with her. Right now we're clueless!
Shiatsu has been recommended too, it's said to have a calming effect.
As you've said, punishment has no effect on immediate behavior. I wish both of us luck!
