Seasonal variations of depression and supplements

Posted by Lao Tzu on June 28, 2008, at 5:44:38

Its very interesting to note that vitamins B12, B3, B6 and zinc are absolutely essential (for me) during the daylight hours in winter because of increased anxiety during this part of the year, whereas anxiety levels are much less for me during the summer months. It could be because of the seasonal variation in depression that the B vitamins and zinc work better for depression during the summer if taken at night rather than during the daylight hours. Its just a theory. Also, vitamin C and B1 seem to be more essential during the daylight hours of summer than in winter, and finding that the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 are equally beneficial during the daylight hours of summer, but must be taken in moderation and only when symptoms appear, i.e. changes in mood and energy levels. That means constantly adjusting my levels of the fatty acids throughout the day during summer. That also means, NO LOADING of both oils in the morning because of side effects. It seems 2,000mg of borage oil is adequate (1,000mg in morning, 1,000mg later in the day), with the addition of 3,000mg of fish oil; 2,000mg during the day and 1,000mg before bed. This is all still a work in progress, but finding out very interesting things about my body and its needs. The B vitamins seem to have a sedating effect on me during the daylight hours of summer, yet produce an anxiety-diminishing effect during the daylight hours of winter. That being said, a sedating substance should be taken at bedtime, not during the day because of the side effect of lethargy and low energy. That is exactly what occurs during summer, lethargy if I take B12, B6, and zinc during the day. The benefits of the B vitamins may still be realized the next day by taking them at bedtime (IN SUMMER ONLY), but the essential fatty acids, vitamin C and B1 are still necessary during the daylight hours. At least, thats my theory. Only time will give a better understanding of this phenomenon and its delicate relationship to the changing of the seasons.
