Atkin's described his version of folic acid recommendation history- that over 50 years ago there was some confusion within the federal govt. about how "too much" folic acid- ie, over 400mcg, could not cause, but possibly mask a B12 deficiency. According to him, that's where the recommended upper limits came from. Atkins pointed out that being sure to get enough B12 can take care of possible B12 deficiency without having to skimp on folic acid, which is great not only for mental health- including depression and schizophrenia, mania- but heart problems and preventing birth defects. Also helpful for restless legs, peripheral neuropathy, ADHD, other conditions. He thought people need 3-8mg daily.
