It really is a powerful hormone. It significantly exacerbated my depression the first and only time I tried it. However, I took it at an indiscriminate time during the middle of the day. Melatonin can disrupt the body's internal clocks if it is taken at the wrong time. On the other hand, melatonin can be used strategically to manipulate the circadian rhythm to one's advantage. One use of melatonin is to reduce the effects of jet-lag. Generally speaking, phase-advancing the circadian clock improves depression while phase-delaying it exacerbates it.
