It is an automatic software-driven process. It requires no human intervention.
I'm going to use numbers to illustrate it, but the exact numbers are ones that Dr. Bob tweaks around. They're different on different boards, to manage the differing traffic levels.
So, using hypothetical numbers......
When the main board accumulates 80 MB of message content, which includes headers and allocated file space for the posts under the headers, the software archives half of the total, placing the earliest date of all the archived material as the one that shows in the archive header. Thus, a post that is in that archived half of the 80 MB total could have any date between the earliest post in that cluster, and the last post that fell just under the 40 MB line. If you want to access any post in a thread, though, all you need to do is open any one post, and *all* the posts in that thread are listed underneath, each as a hypertext hot link.
Once the 40 MB of archival material is allocated to the archive access file tree, the hard drive then continues to accumulate new posts on the current board, showing all those carried forward 40 MB of posts, and all new posts.....until it hits 80 MB again. At 80 MB total, a new branch is started, carrying forward the most recent 40 MB posted, and the 40 MB that was carried forward the last time becomes the next archive.
Once a day? the software does a "how big is the current board, in MB?" thing, and if <current board size> is greater than <threshold size for archive process>, then the whole thing just goes, automagically.
The main board has hundreds of archives, whereas some other boards hardly have a few, yet.
