I've never been sailing but my thinking resembles the way they tack from position to position. I'm always off course and have to adjust, or rather, jerk wildly in one direction or another.
On the wrong tack with one metaphor, I try to counter with more exaggeration in the other direction and end up even further off course. Calm, clear thought eludes me.
