This article discusses the quality of evidence supporting mental health benefits and
risks of 4 widely used herbal medicines: saffron (Crocus satins), passionflower
(Passifbra ircarnata), valerian (Valeriana of and sage (Salvia officinalis).
SAFFRON (C sArivus)
Saffron, the world's most expensive spice, is derived from the flower of C sativus.
Originating in Crete, Csativus has been used for thousands of years and is mentioned
in a seventh century sic Assyrian botanic text. Although it has been propagated
throughout Eurasia and other continents, Iran produces 90% of the world's saffron
and generates most of the research into its potential medical uses.
