All I know is I tried Clomipramine once and it was such a dirty drug with strong side effects that I think it would work really well for social anxiety amongst elephants. It's that strong. :-) Honestly I think the social anxiety benefit from it is probably due to the very strong antihistamine effect more than anything else. The serotonin stuff and norepinephrine stuff helps.

I can think of a handful of cheap over the counter herbal capsules that work better on social anxiety than clomipramine, and at a fraction of the cost and with near zero side effects.

Sometimes I think it might make more sense for someone to deal with their social anxiety in other ways most of the time - relaxation methods, yoga, herbs, supplements, deep breathing, exercise, whatever helps - but use a specific drug for special occasions rather than 24/7. For example if you're heading out to a dinner party and you're real nervous about it, there is no need to be hooked on some heavy duty med every day of your life for that. You can manage the rest of it.

But for those crucial times, there is always stuff like Xanax, Valium, Ritalin, Adderall, and others that can put you comfortably in the middle of a crowd.
