I think psych diagnosis matters (speaking as someone in the 21st century US) because there's a very real -line- across which...once one crosses, its over, socially.
"severe depression." OK. Increasingly...Bipolar, especially Bipolar II...OK. And then...
there's Schizoaffective, Schizophrenia. These are well past the line, in a sort of stigmatized no man's land.
I know this because my community-wide label/diagnosis is Schizophrenia. The official diagnosis is still, somehow, Bipolar I. The difference is...
I've clearly crossed the line, or been pushed over the line, into utter and complete invalidation. And yet...
I have my now "well-to-do" parents solidly behind me. That makes a world of difference. Not that I live lavishly or anything, but...I see how many "mental patients" live, and I've been spared all that, thank goodness.
But I've crossed the line, and I think its a forever-type situation.
