Hi,

Thank you for posting, and welcome to the boards here on Psycho-Babble. I'd definitely say that I experienced side effects that were at least similar to those that you've described here when I tried the Parnate that the psychiatrist that I was seeing back in 2005 prescribed for me then. I think that I was taking either 20 mg or 30 mg of Parnate at the time, and once I'd get to a certain point in the afternoon, the need for sleep would come on so strongly that no attempts that I made in fighting the sleepiness (including consuming caffeinated beverages) ever succeeded. I was taking a couple of classes at the time that I was taking the Parnate that was prescribed to me, and because I had already slept through a few classes from taking Parnate at 20 or 30 mg, I didn't want to risk having the problem with afternoon sleepiness get worse or even stay the same with either a higher dose than I was taking or with the same dose, so I stopped taking the medication.

So, the strong feelings of sleepiness that I experienced during the afternoons for the time that I spent taking the Parnate that my psychiatrist prescribed me in 2005 didn't go away for me, but I think that I only stayed on the medication for a few weeks and didn't give the medication a longer trial to see if the feelings of sleepiness would go away. I will say that I later took a different version of tranylcypromine that I ordered from the U.K. and didn't notice the side effect of afternoon sleepiness at all with that version of the medication, but for a few different reasons, I can't say that I'd recommend taking that version of tranylcypromine at this time. I didn't even find that version of tranylcypromine to be helpful in reducing the severity of the symptoms of my depressive illness in the long run anyway, even though it seemed to help in the short run.

I wish that I could be of more help to you, but unfortunately, it would be hard for me to predict whether the tiredness that you've been experiencing at 30 mg of Parnate might fade if you take a higher dose. It's possible that somebody else here who might have experienced some of the tiredness that we've experienced with lower doses of Parnate and also might have taken higher doses of the medication might be able to speak from experience as to whether taking higher doses of Parnate could sometimes involve less tiredness than taking lower doses of the medication. You might also want to try asking the professional who prescribed your medication whether or not any patients that he or she might have treated with Parnate in the past experienced less tiredness with higher doses of the medication than they did with lower doses of the medication, if it's the case that your prescriber has treated patients with higher Parnate doses in the past. And if you don't ultimately find Parnate to be worth continuing, you might want to look into other MAOI antidepressants if you haven't tried them already, or perhaps dietary supplements that seem to inhibit the monoamine oxidase enzymes, such as Rhodiola rosea and curcumin. If Parnate is the only medication for your condition that you've found to be helpful, then I tend to think that trying other compounds with the ability to inhibit the monoamine oxidase enzymes would be more likely to be beneficial for you than a different type of medical treatment. But you might want to look into other treatment options, as well.

At any rate, I wish you luck with your efforts in finding a treatment or combination of treatments that will serve you well. And if you have any other questions that you'd like to ask of me or of anyone else on this site, feel free to let us know.
