That's a great question.
For me, regular lithium carbonate 450 mg/day is just on the threshold of producing undesirable mental side effects. At 600 mg/day, I feel pretty yucky. I experience some dysphoria, flat affect, apathy, passivity, slowed thinking, and some other stuff. As best as I can remember, this occurs at a blood level of 0.4 mEq/L. When I switched from lithium carbonate 450 mg/day to lithobid 450 mg/day, I experienced the emergence of the mental side effects. When I returned to lithium carbonate, the side effects disappeared. I have since reduced reduced lithium carbonate to 300 mg/day and retained the antidepressant effect.
