Lyrica vs Neurontin (gabapentin)

I once successfully withdrew from BZDs using Lyrica. Pdocs now avoid them due to problems with abuse and horrible withdrawal problems.
Is gabapentin as effective as Lyrica? Could it be used in the same way?
