I seem to recall reading (though I could be wrong AND I don't have references, so...take it with a grain of salt) that pericyazine was considered a "weaker" neuroleptic; less EPS, more sedation. Used for less severely disabled patients and also in conjunction with ongoing antipsychotic treatment (you might, for instance, take Haldol plus neulactil, with the neulactil acting kind of like a sedative/anti-anxiety drug).
I think it is a kind of random drug choice, and I'd be worried about tardive _____ (you fill in the blank--there's lots of tardive syndromes), but at low doses for a short period of time, maybe it wouldn't be so terrible?
