I have long considered the need for constant success and achievement as one of the causes of depression. The chronic stress caused by striving to achieve. The constant tension created when comparing where one is now with where one desires to be. It's energizing, but stressful.
The opposite of the need to achieve is contentment, the acceptance of oneself and one's world as okay just the way it is. Not a popular concept in the West these days. We are taught to value success and power above all.
Not that there is anything wrong with a little desire, purpose or ambition, if it is balanced with an equal mix of love and acceptance.
