From my research magnesium has natural relaxant properties. It also blocks norepinephrine in some studies that have been done. Aside from the laxative effect that some people experience (with me for some reason I can tolerate high amounts), but have not been taking it like I want to for medical issues and having flank pain...
It works well for me. If the side effects are that it is making you more depressed then perhaps you should look into how much you are taking.
