But it is also quickly converted to meprobamate, Miltown, an old and discontinued attempt at a non barbiturate/non-Quaalude anxiolytic.
It is still not a controlled substance in the US, but there are watching eyes on it -- personally, under the care of a watching doctor, that's fine, as long as there isn't other CNS depressants like any substantial amount of benzodiazepines. Some states would like to make it C-V or C-IV.
