I imagine a heck of a lot longer than here in the states without socialized medicine before they drain your bank account. There is no such thing as true mental parity in insurance as there are so many loops and it is usually put to outside insurance contractors, not to mention that they could cancel your insurance outright.

Just had to get that one in.

A psychiatric hospital is not the best place to get better in the US. Its a place for cases that have gone so far beyond outside care that one has to volunteer or be forced to take their services.

(Schizophrenia alone costs beyond $2 billion to the US and is managed so fragmentedly, some places like the various Veterans Administrations having good research and other hospitals outside academia floundering.)

Yes -- if you feel like you are -actually- going to commit suicide or some sort of situation like that, a short stay at a hospital is necessary.

But in the end, as is said by some, familiar places and familiar faces are the best places for rehabilitation, whether it be family or friends, especially -- social contact, organizations like NAMI, and the like.
