In reply to This Isn't Funny No Pdoc Will Take Medicaire here., posted by Phillipa on April 25, 2008, at 12:10:57
Phillipa, ya know, it is really frustrating when people here give you heartfelt sincere advice with your best interest in success in mind, and yet you just read it and toss it.
I am only one of many examples. How many times have I asked you to have yourself or your husband go down the phone book and call doctor offices, hospitals, medical schools? Ya know, there is a perfect doc within 30 miles of you somewhere. Charlotte isn't exactly a remote tiny town. You aint gonna find a doc by sitting back and worrying. You are going to find one by walking across the room, grabbing the phone book, opening it up to Physicians, and start calling one at a time in alphabetical order. 90% of them are going to go nowhere. You are looking for the 10% that will produce leads. You will probably even get a direct hit and score and not just a lead.
I can't believe you wanted to go back to your old pdoc? Why? I'm sorry, please forgive my opinionated comment, but that is just absurd. Geez, turn around and go backwards why don't you. How bout moving forward? Yeah it takes some effort and yeah it's kind of scary. It seems to me you are stuck in a comfort zone, though a hellish one, but a comfort zone nevertheless. Aint nothin good gonna happen that way.
You know where I found the one and only real good pdoc I had? The phone book. I called everyone, explained my situation, and asked for their ideas. Most responses I got fell into categories like this..."We're pretty booked up"; "The doctor would have to see you before we could recommend anything"; "We are not aware of anyone who prescribes Nardil"; "Don't call us, we'll call you"' blah blah blah. But then one office I called asked me, "Have you heard of Dr Katz? He's been around a long time and many other psychiatrists refer patients to him. He is very good." ....this referral was from another psychiatrist who himself was supposedly pretty good.
Well, how come no one else gave me that name? Didn't matter. They were all probably stuck in their own worlds and never heard of Dr Katz either. But I had a lead! Upon calling him, he was a whiz with meds, great bedside manners, open to try anything, and since he was an old timer near retirement his was around when Nardil and Parnate were the only antidepressants available.
He was great with me. I have had half dozen other psychiatrists, and I've heard countless stories of other psychiatrists. Dr Katz was so far over their heads it wasn't funny. And I found him by asking questions cold calling doctors offices in the friggin phone book! Then he retired. Damn. But the bottom line is, you get out of it what you put into it. Put some effort into searching and you will find someone who has both the quality match and the financial match you are seeking.
