Well...I am going to be 'frank' (no that is not my name...lol.) We MUST 'play' the system. Nobody else give a crap about our problems, no matter what shrinks say. This may seem controversial, but it finally got me the wide selection of meds and treatment I needed. A lot of people (all good, intelligent) go to the psychiatrists or doctors office, and then make their plea of depression and anxiety. So, most conservative doctors will give you a nice shiny SSRI, and heaven forbid, MAYBE a benzo (if you are lucky.) Now, how often do these meds work in the first place? If you have a problem with your SSRI, you'd be lucky if the switched the dose or to another SSRI.
So what did I do? I went *bonkers*, and I exaggerated every problem and emotion. I walked into the walk-in clinic, and told the doctor there a few things...and *I* stated what my problems where. I was bipolar (but still being treated with antidepressants and a very low dose benzo), but went to the ends with hallucinations, acting (well talking about being) psychotic, and that I just spent 10,000 bucks on new clothes. I also said that I thought there where people spying on me.
So, that was first how I got to try Epival/Depakote. Then we went through a number of meds my shrink would flip his power-controlling shirt over. Within a couple of days, the 'cocktail' was doing it's job, and I feel much better about myself then I did 10 years ago. My motto (and I've heard this from many others): If you think you are smarter then your pdoc, you likely are! Research, explore, do as much homework on your treatment as possible. Don't trust these people...unless you have someone really good.IMHO...
