In reply to Wellbutrin makes me mean!!, posted by pearlcat on March 21, 2007, at 12:44:04
Hi,
While titrating up on Wellbutrin a few years ago I actually had a bout of road rage. Three guys pulled from the side of the road right in front of me. I had to lock my brakes and swerve into the other lane to keep from smashing into them. I turned and all three were flipping me off. The battle was on! Three against one. I was lucky I didn't end up in jail, or worse. And I'm usually a pretty mellow guy. Nothing like this had happened to me for over 30 years.Seems like it is the first few weeks on bupropion that any repressed hostility rears it's ugly head. After a few weeks this side effect goes away, at least in my case.
Take care,

http://rx-s.net/weblog/more/bupropion_side_effects/"In clinical trials of bupropion for either the treatment of depressive symptoms or for smoking cessation, the most common side effects reported are headache/migraine (26%) and insomnia (roughly 29%). A substantial number of patients taking bupropion experience increased agitation, anxiety, CNS stimulation, irritability, and restlessness. Some symptoms may be dose-related and may respond to dosage reduction. To limit insomnia, do not give doses close to bedtime. In some cases these symptoms may require treatment with sedative/hypnotic therapy. Depression has been reported frequently in smoking cessation studies (incidence >/= 1/100 patients). In roughly 2% of patients treated, CNS symptoms will necessitate drug discontinuation. While causality with bupropion has not been determined, CNS symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), hypomania, and mania may be an indication of worsening depression or suicidal tendencies, and should be immediately reported to the health care provider."
