Saturn,
Let us know how the tests turn out, if you don't mind, and what your pdoc says of them (if anything).
I have to admit that this article reeks of free advertising, as though one of the company reps gathered up her/his contacts at the big newspapers and hoped to garner some free publicity. I wouldn't be surprised if they did so, and supplied the case studies involved to boot.
This just puts me back where I started, I have to say: frustrated at the crudeness of modern psychiatry and terrified of the possibility that some such drug reaction could occur to the likes of (highly allergic) loved ones--or me. The example of the quibbling psychiatrist who claims she can suss out poor metabolizers by their reactions to robutussein, asking for family history, etc., does not inspire confidence. Any ideas on what doctors do if they discover that their patients are poor metabolizers or intermediate metabolizers? This goes for psychiatrists and "regular" doctors?
Just to ramble a bit. Interesting that this article focuses on psychiatric drugs rather than other meds heavily metabolized by the enzymes in question. Anyone have a clue as to how much of the drug market psych meds make up? And/or what those docs would do if they encounter a poor and intermediate metabolizer? (And how would they discover this anyway?) The article raises plenty of questions...
