Because Xanax XR is a time release pill, meaning it first releases a set amount of the medication and then over time releases more and more. If you were to split it you most likely will get the concentrated dose of the pill which would result in doubling - even tripling the amount. I would sincerely urge you to talk to a pharmacist and even your doctor if you think the current dose is to high.

Now if you chew one, that's a different story, but I have not noticed an increased effect by cutting them. Of course the only reason to split them in my opinion is if you are weaning off.
