Hi,
Waking up in the middle of the night with a heartrate of 180 beat per minute would be an extremely scarey experience. There is a non-dangerous condition known as "inappropriate sinus tachycardia" - inappropriate because the heartrate is not in response to exercise or extreme fear - "sinus" because the electrical stimulus is coming from the sinus node (normal)and, - tachycardia, simply meaning a heartrate above 100 beats per minute. The Toprol XL (a beta blocker) should keep your heartrate under good control. If these symptoms come back, see your cardiologist who may want to refer you to an electrophysiologist (cardiologist with a subspecialty in the electrical system of the heart).
