My doctor told me it was pretty safe, but I guess that was compared to smoking. Nicotine is gotta be the most addictive drug ever though. It got me off the smokes but just transfered my addiction to the gum. If you decide to try it Sam's Club or Costco have the best price I could find, but it's not cheap. It probably costs me about $150.00/month but I consume a lot of the stuff.
I imagine any studies would be too short to tell long term effects since it is only recommended for a short period until you finish with reducing the dose.
