There is a model of "kindling" they call it, whereby mania is thought to be associated with irratic and random firing within the temporal lobes of the brain.
Many of our famous antimanic agents (with the exception of lithium) were originally antiepileptic medications.
Some people with bipolar disorder actually have manic episodes progressing to seizures.
On the flipside, many people with epilepsy experience mood disorders as well. Epelepsy is the medical condition with the highest prevailance of mood disorders.
When I was in the hospital, there were 4 patients who had epilepsy and comorbid bipolar disorder.
So there can be an association but one doesn't conclusivly cause the other, really depends on the location of the random firing activity.
