In reply to Exercise Making Me More Depressed/Irritable - HELP, posted by Survector on May 27, 2004, at 0:34:19
Dear Survector,
I really feel for you...and I can tell by your post you are sincere and genuine. However...
I can assure you that Exercise is NOT the problem. All studies, research and real-life experiences done to date...show that exercise is a BENEFIT to our entire life. Before the days of health clubs, Gyms and Sports Facilities, our ancestors had their own "work out" programs. It was called survival of daily life.
Our bodies were designed by our Creator to function at peek, WHEN WE ARE THE MOST ACTIVE.
I personally have probabley done just about every type of exercise available during my life.
From childhood forward I have played sports of all kinds.I have lifed weights,( both Powerlifting and Bodybuilding) cardio, Pilates, Martial Arts etc...
Sometimes the short-term effects of certain exercise does INCREASE irritability, due to the increase of our base metabolic rate. This is especially true of heavy weight training and other High Intensity exercise.
The "good" part of this is the proven fact that weight loss and increase in muscle tone is a by-product of this increased metabolism.
The bad part for those of us who struggle with emotional and/or genetic predispostions to depression, anxiety. etc...is that it can aggravate our condition...in the beginning.
The good news is that over time as the body re-adjusts to our increased exercise output...we feel BETTER!
You are young, and no doubt a very capable athlete.
May I suggest you include and 1 hour period of stretching in addittion to other exercise you do?
Stretching is SO UNDER-RATED and yet the calming benefits are DO great!
You should stretch before AND AFTER exercise ( during the cooling down period)Try it and keep us posted.
Also I can pass along several Kung-Fu Exercises
that are designed to release stress...and build your body at the same time.
Let me know.Buckeye Fan
