In reply to delayed ejaculation; lexapro vs. celexa?, posted by scott-d-o on February 2, 2004, at 19:05:39
You are not alone. Docs prescribe SSRI's to treat pre-mature ejaculation. I used to take Celexa and now take Lexapro. I can't comment on which causes more sexual side effects because I have been on different doses of each and the side effect probably increases with the dose. My guess is that Lexapro causes less side effects.
Don't try to figure things out based on serotonin specificity. Scientists do not know how these drugs work. For that matter, they don't fully understand the various effects of aspirin. It's all trial and error.
Up until now, scientists thought that antidepressants might work by increasing serotonin, dopamine, and/or norepinephrine. According to a recent Newsweek magazine, the neurotransmitter model is losing support. The new model that most scientists are leaning towards is that antidepressants, by some unknown mechanism, work by increasing the size of a portion of the brain called the hippocampus.
