In reply to Anyone tried Rilutek or Sabril here?, posted by Ame Sans Vie on August 5, 2003, at 16:56:12
> My meds are definitely staying the way they are, but I've long been curious about these two medications, especially in treating anxiety. Rilutek (riluzole) is a med for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which inhibits the reuptake of GABA-A and GABA-B (unlike that godforsaken Gabitril, which just targets GABA-B) and possesses anticonvulsant and hypnotic properties. Sabril (vigabatrin/gamma-vinyl-GABA) inhibits GABA-transaminase, the enzyme that is to GABA what MAOI is to dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine, etc. Nardil also inhibits GABA-T, which could largely account for its anxiolytic action.

There are serious eye problems (Visual field defects) with Sabril. It affects 1/3 and is irreversible. Its definatley not a first line treatment...
