Depakote (valproic acid) is a "mood stabilizer", until recently used most often for the extreme form of bipolar disorder ("manic depression"). It seems to be used more widely now for anxiety/agitation etc., at lower doses than for severe bipolar disorder.

I declined taking it due to many reports of mood dulling, weight gain, and possible liver damage. However, it seems to be very effective for some people, who I'm sure will fill you in on the details.
