Policy? A PPO is a type of managed care health insurance. You'd have to talk to your employer about it, and spend a few hundred (at least) extra per month than the HMO would cost you underneath your employer.
A PPO is a premium managed care plan that lets you see any doctor you wish without a referral. If it's in network, you get it covered minus any co-pays. If it's out-of-network, you still get 80% covered (which is a great safety net, because 99% of the time you'll find someone in-network anyway).
In my case, it also means I can see my psychiatrist, and any mental health professional, as many times as I want without prior approval. And I just call the doctor directly, no dealing with my GP to refer me to one. It's great for people as messed up as I am, because I've had to see two different neurologists, a pulmonary specialist, three different psychopharmacologists (for second opinions) ER docs now and then (which cost $30, and even that's waived if I'm admitted overnight) and surgeries and so fourth. Oh, I also see a dermatologist, have about 7 different meds I take a month, and all meds are covered... the most expensive, however, are "tier-3", which wind up being the ones I need these days, costing $30 in co-pays versus $5 or $15 for t-1 and t-2s.
It's under my dad's insurance plan, and he pays hundreds of dollars more a month just so my family has a PPO instead of an HMO. I'm hoping to use the next two years of it as much as possible to see specialists to sort out my problems, because I have sleeping disorders, anxiety, ADD, and stuff.
You need to speak with your employer about insurance options. It's not like you buy it online. But I can guarantee you, if you don't have insurance, don't even bother thinking about a drug that costs like $500 a month. That's $6000/yr. Why would you do that?
