Effexor XR and migraines

Posted by Sue555 on June 18, 2003, at 11:25:33

I have been on effexor XR for 6 months for prophalactic use for migraines. The first month on this drug, I went 29 days without a migraine, which is the most I've ever gone since being treated with various things for over 2 yrs. I am currently on 150 mgs. My track record has not been that good again, but when I do have a migraine, I do not get the depression and overall "washed out" feeling like before. It's now just a bad headache. I may need to increase my dose to improve my results. Side effects are mostly of the annoying nature: constipation, occasional night sweats, involuntary muscle twitches, occasional morning dizziness and somnolence. It has taken me 6 mo. to figure out when is best for me to take the medication, as I surprisingly have experienced both insomnia and somnolence on this medication. For me 8pm seems to be a good time, as I get the sleepiest a couple of hours after taking the med. I still get somewhat sleepy in the mornings, but have figured out that I can take about 100 mgs of caffeine and offset the sleepiness. Overall, I feel really great on effexor and have lots of energy. I hope this information helps someone.
