As far as I can gather, there are five main reasons that GHV (gamma hydroxyvalerate, 4-methyl-GHB) could be considered less dangerous than GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate).
*Just a slight overdose of GHB can knock you out. No dose of GHV or 4-pentanolide will force you to sleep; it's much more anxiolytic than hypnotic.
*GHB causes a massive release of stored dopamine as its effects wear off; GHV does not.
*GHV does not cause the amnesia that makes GHB so conducive to rape.
*GHV does not cause euphoria like GHB does... if anything, it possesses a mild, Xanax-esque antidepressant quality.
*The lethal dose of GHV is around four times higher than GHB's, which is already very high to begin with (unless comined with other CNS depressants).
