Short term seems to be weight loss for most, long term varies.
One of the initial side effects is loss of appetite and sleeplessness, so you tend to lose weight. After a while (a few months for me), Effexor XR can make you feel sluggish and sleepy some days, although not all days. Then you can gain some wight back and more for some people. Some people have reported significant weight loss even long term however, so it varies.
Effexor XR can be augmented with stimulants if you become sluggish after a while - my case now. I'm seeing my doc this week and I suspect we'll either change my current dosage or add a stimulant. She mentioned it the last time we met.
In conclusion, compared to other ADs, Effexor R has a better track record wrt weight problems.
