Dr. Kramer: Weight gain and medication...

Posted by jay on April 1, 2002, at 10:23:07

Dr. Kramer:

Having been on a combination of Effexor XR, 150mg and Zyprexa, 2.5mg's for a long period of time, I have gained more than a healthy amount of weight.
Yes, my mental health is most important, and has been majorly helped by these good medications, but my weight is unhealthy for a 32 year old male.

Now, I don't wish to go the stimulant or amphetamine route to lose weight, as I don't want to risk upseting my anxiety, as well as a possible bipolar II condition. What are your thoughts on the medication Topomax, and are the weight-loss effects "long term", from your experience? (Unlike the SSRI medications, which have a short-term weight loss period.)

My doctor doesn't feel Topomax will provide that needed help for long-term weight loss. I have started exercise, including a healthy cardio daily routine, and am working on my diet. Do you have any further suggestions for possible medication assistance with weight gain, and any long-term thoughts on Topomax?

Thanks very much..
