Hi Shelli,
I was on ms contin (morphine sulfate) for about a year in 1998 following a severe car accident. I tapered off of 180mg/day dose (pretty hefty) in 2 months under my doc's supervision and using clonidine. It was not difficult. Morphine is much stronger than oxycontin (I don't know to what degree), maybe someone else will know. I'm sure your doc will find a comparable dose for you. It is an excellent AD. I'm tapering off of fentanyl now (8x stronger than morphine) because of my pregnancy but believe me I won't hesitate to go back on. I remember when my first pain doc gave me ms contin he said he had all types of professionals on it for years with no side effects (constipation, initial sedation). I think you are very fortunate to find someone supportive, and if you haven't abused oxycontin, there is no reason to think you will abuse morphine. Best of luck- judy
