Mental Disability.....and not having to work.....

Hi, new to the board here. I have what might appear to be an ignorant question, however I don't mean it to be.
How do you go about getting long term disability due to depression, etc? I'll get into my story later (cause it's a loooooooong one) but I was just curious for those of you that are on disability due to your illness.
