Lamotrigine and weight-loss

Volume 20(6) December 2000:

"The preliminary data of this study suggest that Lamotrigine (LTG) is more effective than either Gabapentin (GBP) or Placebo in a group of patients with refractory affective disorders. LTG, although more technically difficult to use than GBP, may nonetheless have more potential as a primary rather than an adjunctive agent based on these initial monotherapy data in refractory patients, as well as in the study of Calabrese and colleagues... In contrast to the weight gain observed during treatment with GBP, patients lost weight while receiving LTG therapy during this 6-week trial, further increasing the possibility of a better side effects profile on weight than other mood stabilizers, such as lithium or valproate..."
