=================================================

Hi Angela,

Virtually all antidepressants, including the newer generation have been reported to cause hair loss (alopecia). Other psychotropics implicated to cause alopecia include lithium, carbamazepine (Tegretol), sodium valproate (Depakote, Depakene), amphetamines, phenothiazines. Other drugs that can induce alopecia include anti-cancer, anticoagulants, antithyroid, and beta-blockers (propranolol, etc.).

Certain physiologic and medical conditions can cause hair loss such as thyroid disorders, nutritonal deficiencies (iron, protein), infections, childbirth, postpartum, genetic propensity, and psychological stress.

The combination of zinc and selenium supplement is usually effective in Depakote-induced hair loss. I am not sure if this works with antidepressant-induced hair loss but may be worth a try. For hair loss due to Depakote, higher daily doses of zinc-selenium combination is recommended such as 100 mg of zinc and 200 mcg of selenium.

Good Luck.
