I gained 50 pounds on Paxil. I took it for 1 year , until Feb. 2000. I discontinued it because of the weight gain mainly (although I also got a high blood pressure with it, and no menstrual period for the whole year). I was perfectly fine until about 2 motnhs ago, when an apparent strep throat that required 1 MONTH of medication (!!) brought panic attacks again. After stoping the Paxil in February, I started dieting and exercising, and I have lost 30 pounds so far. Now that I am having panic attacks again, I am totally unsure about going back to Paxil, as my doctor recommended. Another doctor said to take Zoloft, but I've read in many forums that Zoloft also causes weight gain. So, I am trying something different this time. I went to an acupuncturist 3 weeks ago, and have been doing some meditation, relaxation exercises and controlled breathing, and also has changed my diet as to eat more veggies and fruits and less meat and oils. I can say that I have honestly seen some improvement. At this point I am not having severe attacks, although I have been feeling very excited, with chest pains and palpitations, but not as severe or frightening as 3 weeks ago. I'll keep you posted on my progress on this "alternative" method, in case anyone out there wants to try something that is not a medication.
