Anna - It is hard to say what the risk of palpitations and blood pressure problems will be for you with Parnate. My suggestion is to work closely with your doc and do voice your concerns to him/her. As for your uncle, you have to factor in contributors to a heart attack (eg lifestyle - smoking, drinking, fatty foods, stress, etc.). Your risks are probably not the same. There are things that you can watch for while taking Parnate. The hypertensive side effects of Parnate are not dose related, but are associated with characteristic symptoms. Some things to watch for are: 1) headache (starts at the back of the head and radiates forward - the headache abates as blood pressure lowers); 2) palpitations; 3) neck stiffness (or soreness); 4) nausea and vomiting; 5) sweating (sometimes with fever and sometimes with cold, clammy skin); and 6) photophobia (eyes are sensitive to light). You can help your doctor by watching for these signs as you begin the drug. If these do occur, it is adviseable to stop Parnate until you have talked to your doctor.
If you work closely with your doctor you should be able to catch any problems as they happen. I have not seen any blood pressure problems in patients who have used my store, but then again I do not see many people who take MAOIs. The incidence of palpitations with Manerix (moclobemide) is low and I have only heard of a couple of people complain of pounding chest, so I am not the best person to ask about MAOIs (mostly book knowledge).
Some of the other guys on this site are more experienced with MAOIs than I am (Scott and John L. - I believe). Hopefully they will post with some of their knowledge. Sorry, I cannot be of more help. - Cam W.
