Bladder problems and antidepressants

Posted by Auntie M on March 3, 2000, at 2:35:16

I have had to stop taking any antidepressant, even the newer SSRIs, because I am susceptible to "neurogenic bladder." That is, urinary retention, stress incontinence, and constant pressure and pelvic pain. It took a long time to find a urologist who made the connection to the meds because this condition is usually caused by spinal injury or MS. I am told that if left untreated, it can result in kidney failure. However, I cannot get an answer as to whether the condition is permanent or reverses once the medication is stopped. Right now I'm doing OK off the meds, but worry that I may need to go back on something if I should bottom out in the future. If the condition reverses every time the medication is stopped, I might be able to go on meds for a few months at a time. Has anybody else had to deal with this side-effect?
(P. S. I have life-long treatment-resistant depression and have been on every AD at some time except MAOIs.)
