"mild form" of epilepsy

My sister (21) has just been diagnosed with a "mild form" of epilepsy based on the results of an EEG. She has never had a true "seizure," but she has blacked out a couple of times and sort of "spaces out" for a few minutes. Does anyone know where I can find out more about this? Also, my father was recently diagnosed with ALS. These aren't related, are they? I don't believe they are.
