Street Cinderella

Street Cinderella

Street Cinderella’s pluckin’
Shards of glass from her feet,
Razor bits of busted slippers
Back from when she was sweet,
A fairy tale turned pale
And I watch her petite
Waif’s face braced in pain,
Worn and scuffed with defeat,
Ashen eyes monochrome
As she daydreams of elite
Suitors sittin’ on her bench
And askin’ her to meet
For a drink on the brink
Of a romance so fleet
That she blushes, breathless,
At the way they all treat
Her like the queen of the prom
Who makes hearts skip a beat.
Yellowed gown, dime-store crown,
Just wants to be discreet,
Doesn’t feel the cold,
Doesn’t feel the heat,
Scans her Washington Square kingdom
Built of bones and concrete.
The last page is torn out,
And her story incomplete,
No prince, no godd*mn castle,
Just a splintered wooden seat
Past the edge of everything
Where the ghost-walkers retreat.

My thanks. I saw a girl in Washington Square Park in lower Manhattan old for her time. That was the inspiration. Ta. Atticus

Thanks! This one came to me when I saw street person who must've only been around 16 or 17. I was struck by the sense of innocence lost at such an early age. Atticus

Oops. Sorry to be so airheaded. I just realized I answered your post for the second time. Sometimes the meds make me a bit spacey. ;) Atticus
