I just came across a name in the dictionary that is from my family name....
It reads:
"<?Celt., as in W. mor, the sea)"
So my name is derived from the sea as well....hummm?
does this count as writing since I am quoting from the Dictionary????Jai Narayan your ubiquitous sister

Perhaps your ancestors were fishermen? Or maybe they lived on the coast of Counties Mayo and Sligo? That's a pretty rough patch of water -- it's where the north Atlantic meets the North Sea. So there could be some connotation of strength implicit in the name as well. As I noted before, the Gaelic root of my mother's maiden name is Odubhda, which means "Dark Chieftan" or "Black Prince," for reasons I've already babbled on about; they were black Irish, invested princes (that means no actual royal blood, but a noble title given in recognition of service), and stone-cold enforcers and killers working for Fiachra. Oh, and one interesting side note. You once mentioned that you had roots in Galway, I believe. My father's people were from that area. I know much less about them than my mother's side, but it appears they were always farmers. "Curiouser and curiouser," said Alice. Ta. :) Atticus, who offers dirty deed and they're done dirt cheap

***I always thought that meant decended from the spanish....dark hair and skin.

**My fathers family were local Chieftains but also farmers.
>I know much less about them than my mother's side, but it appears they were always

>"Curiouser and curiouser," said Alice.
**love this "Curiouser and curiouser," ...I lived breathed and loved Alice.

Yes, you're absolutely right about the suspected origins of black Irish like myself. Spanish sailors settled in Ireland with native women. Some of the Odubhda have wonderful little descriptors after their names like so-and-so "Ravenhair" or so-and-so "of the flowing black locks." The swarthy color eventually was geneticaly watered down so I have that classically pale Irish skin that burns after two seconds in the sun, but the dark hair remains, above two very Irish bright blue eyes. My mom is the only other one in my immediate family with blue eyes. Everyone else has brown ones -- perhaps a touch of the Spanish emerging, but who can say? My sister does have a touch of Mediterranean coloring, and with her long dark hair and brown eyes, she could almost pass for Spanish. Maybe my fascination with bladed dueling weapons draws on some ancestral memory of the time when the Odubhda sept made its living with steel. At any rate, it's fun to think about. Bet I was the first one in the clan to attack someone with a bladed weapon in a long time.
